Search Tips

Searching for names on the unclaimed funds list is not as straight-forward as you may think.  About half the time, names are spelled wrong or otherwise not as they should appear.  In fact, this is how many of the people and businesses wind up on the database.

Here are some tips for successful searching:

  • Use as few letters in the name as possible.  For example, if are searching for the last name "Henderson", try first searching for "Hen", then "Hend", and so on.  You may find that the fewer letter brings up too many listings (sometimes the states will just say, "Too many names on the list").  Keep adding a letter until the list appears.

  • Try variations of the spelling.  "Johnson" could be listed as "Johnnson" or some other variation.

  • Enter the first name as the last name.  Some computers enter last name first so the state may pick that up as verbatim.
